What is ping, and why does it matter for MMOs?
Ping (also called latency) is the round-trip time it takes for data to travel from your device to a game server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower ping means your actions register faster — critical for PvP, raid mechanics, and anything timing-sensitive. High ping can cause rubber-banding, delayed ability activation, and desync in combat.
What counts as a good ping for gaming?
Generally, under 50ms is excellent, 50–100ms is good for most content, and above 150ms starts to feel noticeable in fast-paced PvP or precision-timing content. Slower-paced content (crafting, questing, casual PvE) is far more forgiving of higher ping than competitive PvP or high-end raiding.
Why does PING555 show "Response Time" instead of just "Ping"?
Web browsers aren't allowed to send raw ICMP ping packets for security reasons — that's a restriction of the browser itself, not something any website can work around. Instead, PING555 measures a real, live network round-trip to each game's official regional infrastructure. This closely tracks your actual in-game ping and reacts to the same routing issues, but it isn't a literal ICMP ping value.
Why does my result change between tests?
Network conditions shift constantly — your Wi-Fi signal, other devices on your network, your ISP's routing at that moment, and general internet congestion can all cause normal variation between tests. Running the diagnostic 2–3 times and looking at the typical result, rather than a single reading, gives the most reliable picture.
Can a VPN actually lower my ping?
Sometimes, yes — if your ISP's default route to a game's region is inefficient, a VPN with a more direct path can occasionally reduce latency, particularly for overseas or cross-region connections. It's not guaranteed to help for every connection, and for players already on a good direct route to their region, a VPN is more likely to add overhead than remove it. Testing your ping both with and without one is the only way to know for sure in your specific case.
Does PING555 store or share my data?
No. The Response Time test runs entirely in your browser and isn't logged, stored, or sent anywhere by PING555. The optional Server Status check does contact our server briefly to test reachability, but no personal data is collected or retained.
Why Your Realm Choice Matters
In most MMOs, your character's home realm or server determines which regional datacenter you connect to every time you log in — so the latency you get on day one is usually the latency you're stuck with for the life of that character, short of a paid transfer. Testing a realm's response time before committing is especially worth doing if you're rolling on a realm outside your home region for guild, friend, or population reasons.
This matters even more for competitive or twitch-based content — PvP, Mythic+/high-end raiding, ranked ladders — where an extra 50–100ms can be the difference between landing an interrupt and missing it entirely.
